In most bar operations, it is the customary procedure to not add tax onto the sale at the bar.  The tax is considered to be included with the price of the drink.  This is known as "inclusive" tax.  This means that the bar owner is absorbing the tax as a cost of doing business, thus reducing the profits of the operation.

DirecTouch Point of Sale has a unique feature that helps bar owners who sell food items at the bar recover the sales tax loss on all orders that have a food item on it.  This feature is called "Smart Tax".

1. In this example the sale is for 2 beers equaling $5.00  The tax to be deducted from profits and sent to the state is shown as $.33.
   
2. When a food item is rung it is customary to add tax to the amount of the item.  This is called "exclusive" tax.  The customer is expecting to pay tax in this manner.  DirecTouch Point of Sale automatically changes the tax status of the additional items to be tax "exclusive", thereby recovering the previously lost sales tax and putting the correct amount of profits back into the operation.
