Prevent Coupon Theft

Think about it.  Coupons are one of the only ways you, as a business owner can print legal tender.  You print coupons that are redeemable for food, goods and services and accept them in place of cash, credit cards or other forms of payment.  Since this is true, why don't restaurant owners pay closer attention to coupons that are redeemed.

Too many cashiers will exchange coupons for cash and the restaurant owner thinks that his coupon program is working.  What the owner forgets is that his cashiers and their friends get the same coupons as the people he is trying to reach.

You need a point of sale system that will prevent coupon stuffing by cashiers and properly accept coupons.

  1. DirecTouch Point of Sale makes it easy or management to create a coupon for an item or group of items.  Start by going to the Managers Menu.
    Select Check
  2. Go to the Discounts and Coupon programming area.
    Select Check
  3. Create the coupon by giving it a name, the type of discount and the amount of the discount.  Remember, the name given here is what is used to report on the redemptions later.

  4. The coupon can be used on a specific item, a group/category of items or an entire department (Food, Beverages).  It is important to link the coupon in order to make sure the coupon is redeemed properly.

  5. For this coupon, we are linking it to the Beverage category.  That means that this coupon will ONLY be redeemed on drinks rung up by the cashier.

  6. Save and Exit the Manager Menu.

  7. Try ringing accepting a coupon for an item that has NOT been rung up and see what happens.

  8. The system will stop the cashier and not allow the transaction to proceed.

  9. When we ring an appropriate item, in this case a drink, the coupon can then be redeemed.
    Select Check
  10. The system will display a list of available coupons and the cashier will chose from this list.  ONLY coupons available will display.  If a coupon has expired it will not be displayed.

  11. What happens if the cashier tries to take a second coupon?  The system will stop the transaction and not let the cashier redeem the coupon more than once per eligible item.
